Paul Allen Phone Home
by Alex R. Mayer
I am not afraid of Paul Allen or anybody on his payroll, which seems sometimes to be the entire city of Seattle. So unfearful am I that I made a documentary film about him called Paul Alien, now available on DVD at www. paulalien.com. The film makes light of his south Lake Union real-estate ventures, as well as his fascination with space travel. It is supposed to be funny.
For those who don't know about this Microsoft co-founder, investor, and third-richest man in America, Paul Allen is a baby boomer who loves Jimi Hendrix and has been known to play a mean electric guitar himself. One of his companies, Vulcan Ventures, is buying up much of downtown for upscale development. Our mayor Greg Nickels is his biggest cheerleader, regardless of the insanity of any given project being rammed through city government by the Vulcans. If someone in your city owned the second largest yacht in the world equipped with its own submarine, yet still expected tax breaks and special treatment from the government, wouldn't it be your duty to make a film that mocks him? Maybe someone should start a newspaper devoted to looking in to Allen's various Seattle shenanigans. I've registered the Web address www.lakeunionpost.com if anyone is interested.
