The immortal Miss Chanel understood the implicit omnipresence of fashion. To understand what is haute one must look beyond the linear rack and delve into the (deeper and less entropic) style of the streets. Fashion, how ever one interprets it, is truly everywhere.
Summer fashion (the "looks-great-on-everyone trend" of the sassy wedge heel, the supped up baby-doll dress, the 1940s waitress-type dress, the wrap-around dress, the nautical, the second toenail painted in a contrasting color-the season of upscale, refined and ruffled, yet comfortable looks replacing the sad "boho" look) is on the streets, but it's now July and savvy Belltownians look to face fall.
Think busy, rich and tailored; loads of patterns and deep, lavish textures. Prepare for menswear fabrics to creep into the fitted-dress world. Stripes, tartans and more & reflecting all the excitement of the current tie arena.
Look for big, boastful handbags. Not the New Jersey/South Boston look of the duffle-purse, bigger than the banana clip, but a sort of 1940s stylized clutch: Narrow but with the surface area of a shoe box. A slick, flip-top with adornments and a classy clasp.
The extend-o sweater tunic paired with something tragically resembling stretch pants (cough, cough here come the leggings) look big and omnipresent. Knit numbers perfect for snuggling up by the fire at the lodge are being thrust into daily rotation. Just remember with the right fitted, NOT SLOPPY yet flowing trench makes it all so good. (Trenches are IT right now, especially perfect for Seattle weather, discover them in all the latest pantones. Fashion meets function. Think Michael Kors.)
Emphasize the collar. This is more than just any dickie! Accentuate the sumptuousness of fresh fall ensembles with flirty fur collars, textured scarves and pashmina-esque, shawl-like wraps (maybe with a few notions of their own). Humongous flower add-ons (like the debris lopped off of poodle prodding prom dresses of yore, but bigger, much bigger), to be worn between the chest and the neck, are prescribed.
